My plot has a clay based soil and consistently lack structure and carbon. As a lazy mans attempt to rectify this I have grown winter tares on a significant portion of my plot this winter.
Winter tares
Mid April the plants were cut down and left to wilt on the surface for a couple of weeks before being dug in.
Green manure left to surface wilt After being dug in the bed then needs to be left for at least a further couple of weeks but ideally four weeks before use.
Bed following the digging in of the manure
03/05/2015: Due to the apparent success with the winter tares several rows of crimson clover has been sown on the weeded asparagus bed in an attempt to manage the persistent weeds.
